Once you have performed a search, either through the Simple Search or the Advanced Search feature, you will have the ability to further narrow your search through facets on the side.
To view the full catalog record details, click on the Title or Thumbnail Icon in the search results, and a pop-up with the full catalog record will appear.
This page will go over the different options available as search facets and limits, as well as how to view catalog records and copy a permalink.
To the left of the search results, you will have the option to limit your search results based on various filters, including: Item Type, Collection Type, Author, Format, Language, Publication Date, and Subject.
To view the available filters, click the tab to expand, or click Expand All.
To apply selected filters, use the Include and Exclude buttons. Include will return search results that match that filter, while Exclude will remove items matching that filter from the results.
Item Type: Use to narrow down by the type of collection item, such as oral histories, archival material, General Collection books, etc. as defined in the Collections Overview page.
Collection Type: Used to narrow by NBLA library holdings (Niels Bohr Library Books) and archival holdings in the International Catalog of Sources (both NBLA and worldwide).
Author: Limit by the author name. These are listed in order of frequency found in the search results. Click More or View All to see the full list of authors and the number of records they show up in.
Format: Limit by the physical format of the item, such as microfilm, electronic resource, monograph. Note that these are properties of the record itself; Item Type is a better filter for looking for items in a certain collection.
Language: Limit by language(s) of the items.
Publication Date: Lets you select a range of publication years for items. Use the slider or type a start and/or end year to select a range to either include or exclude from the results. You can also click the Years button to view the list of publication dates by frequency instead of the Graph view.
Subject: Limit by the available subject terms found in the results. Like Author, these are ordered by frequency that they appear in the search results.
In the search display view and in the detailed view for each catalog, you will see a Permalink button. Click this to view a permanent and unique URL for the item which you can copy to link back to the catalog record. This permalink will link to a detailed view of the catalog record.
Tip: clicking the permalink button will open a pop-up window with the permalink URL, but you need to copy it to actually save it to your clipboard. (e.g. Ctrl + C on Windows)
Sorting Results:
Search results will automatically return ordered by relevance. However you can sort results using the Sort By dropdown menu in the top right corner. Options include Publication Date (both ascending and descending), alphabetical by Title, and alphabetical by Author.
Selecting Results:
If you select records using the check boxes next to each item in the search results, you can use the action menu to add these to the My Lists feature or email them to yourself. See the Account and My Lists page of this guide for more information.
Search Results Display:
The default result view is the list view, which includes basic information about the items and their availability. You can also view results in the Thumbnail View by clicking on the 4-square grid icon under the Sort By dropdown menu. This will display just a large thumbnail of the cover, along with title and author information.
Detailed View of the Catalog Record:
To view the full details of a catalog record, click on either the title or the thumbnail image icon for the record you would like to open, you can then view it in a pop-up. From this pop-up view, you can also generate a permalink and add the item to "My Lists".
