A guide to collections related to Science Communication at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives.

Overview

At the Niels Bohr Library & Archives (NBLA), we have several collections related to science communication and even whole call number ranges dedicated to communication among scientists and to the public perception of science. This research guide gives an overview of some books, archival collections, oral histories, audio and visual materials related to science communication at NBLA! For more information and help requesting items, email us at nbl@aip.org

Science Communication

What is science communication? Science communication is the practice of communicating scientific knowledge and ideas to various audiences, both internal and external. Science communication is an essential but often undervalued skill for scientists to have. Ranging from how scientists communicating findings to other scientists within the community, to funding agencies, and stakeholders, to how they communicating the concepts and significance of science to the general public, scientific communication comes in many forms. This guide aims to illustrate some of these form and audiences of science communcation through materials held at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives.

Graphic Caption: Schematic overview of the field and the actors of science communication. Science communication is informing, educating, raising awareness of science-related topics, and increasing the sense of wonder about scientific discoveries and arguments. Science communicators and audiences are ambiguously defined and the expertise and level of science knowledge varies with each group. The two types of science communication are outward-facing (or science outreach; science journalism and science exhibition typically conducted by scientists or science journalists to non-expert audiences) and inward-facing (or science “inreach”; scholarly communication and publication in scientific journals via expert to expert communication).
